What is an Itoh peony?

Itoh peonies (also called intersectional peonies) are hybrids between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies. You get large flowers and sturdy stems, with a plant that reliably returns each year.

Difference: Itoh peony vs tree peony vs herbaceous peony

Key differences: Itoh peony

  • Intersectional hybrid: often combines large flowers with herbaceous growth habit.
  • Strong, self-supporting stems: usually little to no staking needed.
  • Multiple buds per stem: often results in a longer bloom display.
  • Dies back in winter: above-ground growth dies back → easy to cut back.
  • Known for yellow/apricot tones and color shifts: colors less common in classic peonies.

Key differences: Tree peony

  • Woody shrub: stays above ground and adds structure even outside the flowering season.
  • Often blooms early: frequently earlier than Itoh and lactiflora types.
  • Flowers on woody stems: very large; can become top-heavy in rain/wind.
  • Different pruning/maintenance: do not cut back to the ground; mainly remove dead wood and shape.
  • More sensitive to transplanting: can recover slowly; flowering may temporarily lag.

Key differences: Lactiflora (herbaceous peony)

  • Classic herbaceous peony: a huge range of cultivars to choose from.
  • Dies back in winter: above-ground growth dies back → cut back.
  • Often blooms later: usually after tree peonies, often also after many Itohs.
  • Many varieties are strongly fragrant: popular as cut flowers.
  • Stems vary by cultivar: double, heavy blooms often need support.
